What is Detroit Techno?
The original techno: futurist, soulful, and rooted in Black American innovation.
Detroit techno is the original strain of techno, pioneered in the mid-1980s by the "Belleville Three" — Juan Atkins, Derrick May, and Kevin Saunderson — alongside Mike Banks and the broader Underground Resistance collective. The sound combines Kraftwerk-inspired futurism, Parliament/Funkadelic-rooted funk, and the rhythmic urgency of Chicago house. Tempos run 125–135 BPM. Detroit techno has always carried an explicit social and political dimension, particularly through Underground Resistance's anti-corporate stance. The lineage continues through Carl Craig, Theo Parrish, Moodymann, and Jeff Mills. While Berlin became techno's commercial centre, Detroit remains its spiritual and aesthetic home — Movement Detroit each year is the genre's most important annual gathering.
