Hard dance
What is Hardstyle?
Distinctive Dutch hard dance defined by reversed bass kicks and euphoric melodies.
Hardstyle is a Dutch hard dance genre that emerged in the early 2000s, fusing the distorted kicks of hardcore with the melodic sensibility of trance. The defining sonic feature is the "reverse bass" — a heavily processed kick whose sustained tail is pitched-tuned and used as a melodic bassline. Tempos run 150–155 BPM. Hardstyle dominates Dutch festival programming through dedicated events (Defqon.1, Qlimax, Reverze) and hardstyle-only labels (Q-dance, Scantraxx). The form has a "raw hardstyle" branch (faster, more aggressive) and a "euphoric hardstyle" branch (more melodic, anthemic). Headhunterz, Wildstylez, and Brennan Heart helped consolidate the modern sound; Da Tweekaz and Sub Zero Project are central touring acts.
