What is IDM?
Intelligent Dance Music — experimental electronic music for headphones, not dancefloors.
IDM ("Intelligent Dance Music") is an umbrella term for experimental, headphone-oriented electronic music that emerged from the early-1990s Warp Records scene around Aphex Twin, Autechre, Boards of Canada, and Squarepusher. The label "IDM" came from a 1993 mailing list and was always contested; producers themselves rarely embraced it. The style prizes compositional complexity, unusual time signatures, and deep sound-design exploration over dancefloor function. Warp's Artificial Intelligence series is the genre's foundational text. IDM significantly influenced ambient, glitch, and the more experimental edges of dubstep and modern electronic music. The form remains active through labels like Planet Mu, Brainfeeder, and Hyperdub, and contemporary artists like Tim Hecker, Oneohtrix Point Never, and Arca extend the lineage.
