What is Industrial Techno?
Distorted, machine-noise-heavy techno built for warehouse soundsystems.
Industrial techno fuses techno's four-on-the-floor with the distortion, metallic textures, and mechanical aggression of industrial music. The style took shape in 1990s Berlin — Sandwell District, Surgeon, Regis, and Function are foundational figures — and runs 130–145 BPM. Tracks favour saturated drums, modular-synth noise, and dystopian atmospheres over melody. The sound is closely associated with Berghain's main floor and labels like Ostgut Ton, Downwards, and Avian. A 2010s revival via Perc, Ansome, AnD, and the broader "raw techno" scene pushed it harder and faster, with festival stages now booking industrial techno alongside peak-time techno. Hard techno and gabber are sibling styles that share its aesthetic but tend toward higher tempos and rave structure.
