What is Nu Disco?
Modern, original-composition disco built for dance floors rather than samples.
Nu disco is a 21st-century take on disco that prizes original composition over disco-house's sample-driven approach. Where disco house loops vintage records, nu disco produces new tracks with live bass, brass, and string parts in the disco tradition. The sound consolidated in the late 2000s on labels like Permanent Vacation and Eskimo, and runs 110–122 BPM — slightly slower than house. Lindstrøm, Todd Terje, Aeroplane, and Hot Toddy are foundational figures. Nu disco overlaps heavily with what has been called space disco, cosmic disco, and Italo-influenced revival, and underpins much of the contemporary "boogie" scene. It is a slower-tempo, song-led counterweight to peak-time house programming.
