The style consolidated in late-1990s Netherlands and remained dominant through the mid-2000s; classics like Above & Beyond's "Sun & Moon" and Armin van Buuren's Imagine define the canon. Today the sound lives on through dedicated labels (Future Sound of Egypt, Coldharbour) and festivals (A State of Trance, Dreamstate). Uplifting trance is the trance variant most strongly associated with the genre's "emotional church" experience, and remains the most commercially successful long-form variant.
