Breakbeat & experimental
What is Breaks?
A more contemporary, club-oriented evolution of breakbeat.
Breaks (sometimes "nu-skool breaks" or "progressive breaks") is the more contemporary, club-oriented evolution of breakbeat. It cleaner production than 1990s breakbeat, integrates electro and house elements, and is built for modern club soundsystems rather than the rave warehouse. Tempos run 130–138 BPM. The style was central to early-2000s UK club programming around the Distinctive Breaks label and producers like Hybrid, BT, and Adam Freeland. Modern breaks production crosses into UK bass, electro, and tech house. The form is closely associated with festival and club programming on the UK south coast (Brighton, Bournemouth) and has had several revival waves through the 2010s and 2020s.
