What is Footwork?
Fast, syncopated Chicago dance music tied to the footwork dance battle scene.
Footwork is a Chicago electronic music genre that grew out of the city's ghetto-house and juke scenes in the mid-2000s. Tracks are built around 160-BPM syncopated rhythms with chopped vocal samples and minimal melodic content; the form is purpose-built to soundtrack the city's footwork dance battles. RP Boo is widely credited as a foundational producer; the late DJ Rashad and DJ Spinn's Teklife crew, signed to Hyperdub, brought the genre international attention in the early 2010s. Footwork's rhythmic complexity has influenced contemporary jungle, drum & bass, and IDM production. The form remains tightly tied to the Chicago dance community and to its international diaspora, with continued releases on Hyperdub, Teklife, and Planet Mu.
