Bass music
What is Future Bass?
Melodic, vocal-led bass music with bright pitched-up synths and trap-derived drums.
Future bass is a melodic offshoot of trap that emerged in the mid-2010s, prizing bright, pitched-up vocal chops, supersaw synth chords, and warm, side-chained low end. Tempos sit at 130–160 BPM with a half-time feel. Flume's 2012 self-titled album and his subsequent productions helped define the template; San Holo, Illenium, and Marshmello pushed it commercially. Future bass is the most pop-friendly bass subgenre, frequently topping mainstream streaming playlists, and has heavily influenced contemporary pop production. The style overlaps with melodic dubstep and "chillstep," and producers like ODESZA bridged it into a more atmospheric, indie-electronic register. Mad Decent, Monstercat, and Spinnin' have been central labels.
