Bass music
What is Trap?
Half-time hip-hop-derived bass music with snare rolls and 808s.
Trap began as a 2000s Atlanta hip-hop subgenre — defined by 808 sub-bass, syncopated snare rolls, and double/triple-time hi-hats — that crossed over into electronic dance music in the early 2010s through producers like Baauer, Flosstradamus, and RL Grime. Tempos sit at 130–150 BPM with a half-time feel (effective 65–75 BPM groove). EDM trap pulls the rhythmic skeleton of hip-hop trap and layers festival-style synth leads, drops, and big builds on top. The genre has a wide tonal range — from the melodic, sentimental "trap soul" sound to the aggressive, distorted "hard trap" branch. RL Grime, NGHTMRE, and Slander helped consolidate the festival sound; Baauer's "Harlem Shake" remains a cultural milestone.
