What is Halftime?
Drum & bass at half-time tempo — closer to trap and dubstep in feel.
Halftime is a drum & bass subgenre where the kick-snare pattern moves at half the usual D&B speed, producing tracks that feel closer to 85 BPM trap or dubstep despite still running at 170–175 BPM. The style emerged in the late 2000s through artists like Ivy Lab, Stray, and Halogenix, and consolidated on labels like 1985 Music and Critical Music. Halftime's slower groove makes it more amenable to hip-hop and trap-style vocals, and it is the D&B subgenre most likely to crossover into wider bass-music programming. The form sits between conventional D&B, trap, and dubstep, and has become a fixture of contemporary UK and US bass festival lineups.
