What is Neurofunk?
Dark, technical drum & bass built on intricate sound design.
Neurofunk is the dark, technical end of drum & bass. Tracks feature intricate, FX-heavy sound design, modulated reese basslines, and clinical drum programming; the mood is dystopian and machine-driven. The style consolidated in the mid-2000s through Noisia, Black Sun Empire, and Phace, and Vision Recordings, Eatbrain, and Blackout became the genre's flagship labels. Tempos run 170–175 BPM. Neurofunk demands more attention from listeners than other D&B variants — sound design is the focus rather than melody — and the form has a dedicated international touring circuit alongside more mainstream D&B. Producers like Mefjus, Maztek, and Misanthrop continue to push the technical envelope.
