Trance family
What is Psytrance?
Fast, hypnotic trance variant rooted in Goa rave culture.
Psytrance — also called psychedelic trance — is a faster, more hypnotic trance variant that grew out of the Goa rave scene in mid-1990s India. Tracks are built on a fast, rolling 16th-note bassline (the "psy" bass), driving 140–148 BPM kicks, and densely layered psychedelic synth textures. Israel and Germany became the genre's production capitals; subgenres include progressive psy (slower, more melodic), full-on (peak-time, anthemic), and dark psy (faster, more dissonant). Psytrance scenes worldwide centre on dedicated outdoor festivals — Boom in Portugal, Ozora in Hungary, and Universo Paralello in Brazil are the most established — and the genre has retained an underground, ritualistic identity even as adjacent dance subgenres have gone commercial.
