Trance family
What is Tech Trance?
Harder-edged trance with the drum punch and acid lines of techno.
Tech trance is a harder, more rhythmically driven variant of trance that borrows the percussive weight, acid lines, and 909 hi-hat patterns of techno. Tempos run 138–142 BPM and tracks lean less on long melodic builds and more on relentless forward propulsion. The style consolidated in the early 2000s with producers like Sander van Doorn, Marco V, and Simon Patterson. Today it thrives in a more underground space than uplifting or vocal trance, and producers like Will Atkinson, Bryan Kearney, and John Askew keep the style active. Tech trance is the trance variant most likely to crossover into psytrance and harder techno programming, and is a fixture of harder festival rooms.
